SSPC’s Polyurea Committee Publishes New Polyurea Application Standard

The new SSPC-PA 14 supplements manufacturers’ instructions for applying plural-component coatings.

SSPC has introduced four new Paint Application (PA) standards related to profile measurement, polyurea application, steel test panels, and scribe undercutting.

PITTSBURGH, PA – September 27 – The SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings has announced one of four new Paint Application (PA) standards specifically related to thick film polyurea coatings application.

The document was developed by SSPC’s C.1.9 Polyurea Committee and is titled “SSPC-PA 14: Plural-Component Application – Field Application of Plural Component Polyurea and Polyurethane Thick Film Coatings to Concrete and Steel.”

The document is intended for use by specifiers, facility owners, contractors, and coating manufacturers in a manner similar to SSPC-PA 1 (“Shop, Field, and Maintenance Painting of Steel”). PA 14 supplements application instructions provided by coating manufacturers to ensure that recommended best practice is followed when applying plural-component coatings.

SSPC-PA 15: Steel Test Panels

“Method for Preparing Steel Test Panels for Evaluation of Coating Performance” standardizes materials and preparation requirements for steel test panels before applying the coatings for testing. Its objective is to minimize variations in coating performance that may be affected by variations in the metallurgy of the steel used for the panels or by the procedures for preparing them. The standard may be used by coating manufacturers, coating testing laboratories, and owners who perform in-house performance testing to evaluate multicoat systems for use on steel.

SSPC-PA 16: Scribe Undercutting
“Method for Evaluating Scribe Undercutting of Exposed Steel Test Panels” establishes a procedure—including data collection, analysis, and reporting requirements—for evaluating rust undercutting on scribed, coated, steel test coupons that are tested in accelerated and natural exposures. The standard is designed for coating manufacturers, testing laboratories, and owners who perform in-house performance testing to evaluate multi-coat systems for use on steel. It is not suitable for thermal-sprayed metals and ceramics, hot-dip and electro-coated metals, and tapes.

SSPC-PA 17: Profile Conformance
“Procedure for Determining Conformance to Steel Profile/Surface Roughness/Peak Count Requirements,” intended for specifiers and contractors, provides a method for determining whether the profile of a steel surface conforms with project specifications when using instruments and procedures contained in ASTM D 4417 and D 7127. The standard includes requirements for frequency and location of instrument readings and evaluation criteria.
